My 2nd grade students come from very low socioeconomic families, despite the many adversities they face at home, they come to school every day with smiling faces, and are eager to learn.
My main goal as their teacher is to create an environment that is warm and inviting, and gives them the opportunity to share their hopes, dreams, concerns, and also build social emotional skills they can use in the classroom and at home.
This year my school is departmentalizing so I will be having around 90 students and my goal is to create a special classroom community with each group of students.
My students and I start every morning by having a morning meeting. To set high expectations for these meetings we need the Flagship rug. This rug will provide every student their own personal spot, and personal space will be our first mini lesson!
This rug will represent a safe place for students to share their celebrations, questions, or concerns.
This is how we also build our classroom community and I teach social emotional learning skills that students use at school and at home. Providing these morning meetings gets our day started on a positive note and the students learn that someone is there to listen to them and offer them a safe environment.
