Magical Moments Start With Music

My Students

Each day in my classroom is a new adventure. I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of students, ages seven to twelve, with a varying range of special needs. My students face challenges in the areas of cognition, speech, motor, visual, hearing, social and/or behavioral skills. Many are also directly impacted by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism or sensory processing disorders. This influences how they interpret and interact with the world around them. Their unique viewpoint has changed who I am as both a teacher and a ​parent.

My students challenge me to provide them with access to meaningful experiences and curriculum that will allow them to grow as future world citizens.

My students inspire and guide my classroom teams as we work together to learn academic, social and life skills.

My Project

Through the incorporation of weekly music therapy sessions, my students have the opportunity to engage in a personalized music curriculum tailored to encourage choice, movement, involvement, communication, and motor skills.

My students are enthusiastic learners who enjoy the inclusion of music and movement into our daily routines and thematic units. When a song or dance move is paired with an activity, participation and retention both rise significantly. I would love to continue to grow their love of music by incorporating weekly, specialized music therapy sessions from a wonderful local provider, Charleston Music Therapy, LLC. Completion of this project would ensure 30 weekly sessions (45 minutes each) that would span the entire 2020-2021 school year.
