Magical Medicine - Compounding in Pharmacology CTE Health Science Class

Help me give my students in Pharmacology (CTE-Health Science) compounding experience throughout the 26-27 school year! Students compound simple syrups, suspensions, ointments and lip balms using mortar and pestles, zinc oxide powder, petrolatum, and other supplies.

My Project

Pharmacology students in the health science program at Tivy High School utilize knowledge of medical math and chemistry while learning the techniques used for compounding medications. The students will use some typical chemistry lab items in addition to the specialized pharmacy items such as using mortar and pestles, zinc oxide powder, petrolatum, and other supplies to compound simple syrups, suspensions, ointments and lip balms. Our students perform all needed calculations in addition to learning skills such as trituration, geometric dilution, spatulation, and comminution.

Pharmacology students are top- performing students who have completed biology, chemistry, Principles of Health Science and Medical Terminology courses.

Some of these students are also working on CNA, MA, Phlebotomy, and EKG certifications while taking this course. Overall, these students are a hard-working and inquisitive group of future health care workers!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
