This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Mathematics in a very small, urban school in Colorado. Two years ago, my 11th grade students had 4 different permanent substitutes as math teachers. I came to the school a year ago and turned things around! I've seen improved scores on state standardized tests; some students jumped 2 or more grade levels in one year! My students did not like Math at all, and now they are signing up for Math Club and learning how FUN math can be!
I also teach 7th and 8th grade Math. In these classes, we are trying to improve our reading scores as well. When most of my students are learning English as a 2nd language, we've taken out the traditional math books and invested in books with a LOT of word problems. The students do math experiments and discover the rules of math on their own or in small groups. We love to share how we solved the problems and read aloud together.
Many of my students can't afford school supplies and the district isn't getting proper funding. Our district is very small with a high population of students. In our 18 square miles, we have over 6,500 students to serve! The teachers tend to be creative to keep costs down. I reuse folders to make dividers in notebooks, use egg cartons for board games, beans for games pieces, and dried spaghetti to make shapes and lines.
With a Document Camera, my students will be able to bring up their work to the front of the class and share with EVERYONE! This would save time and resources because I wouldn't have to have the students rewriting on my markerboards, making posters large enough for people in the back of the room, or having them do an assignment twice. They would be able to place their paper under the camera and share how they solved a problem, made a graph, or used a calculator correctly.
In math, we make a lot of graphs, tables, and show our work. Sometimes, we come up with different ways to arrive at the same solution! We'd love to share our work easily and quickly with the whole class, using our "Magic Eyeballs." Thank you for your help and support!
Your help and support would be appreciated EVERYDAY in my classroom. This would be something that would be used by many students throughout the school day. This isn't something that would be used once a year and collect dust in a closet. You would help make it possible for my students who can't afford glasses to see student work better. This would also help my students see alternative ways to solve problems and share their efforts.
