I teach Mathematics in a very small, urban school in Colorado. Two years ago, my 11th grade students had 4 different permanent substitutes as math teachers. I came to the school a year ago and turned things around! I've seen improved scores on state standardized tests; some students jumped 2 or more grade levels in one year! My students did not like Math at all, and now they are signing up for Math Club and learning how FUN math can be! I also teach 7th and 8th grade Math. In these classes, we are trying to improve our reading scores as well. When most of my students are learning English as a 2nd language, we've taken out the traditional math books and invested in books with a LOT of word problems. The students do math experiments and discover the rules of math on their own or in small groups. We love to share how we solved the problems and read aloud together.
