Magic Carpet Needed

My students need a carpet where they can work in small groups or where we can meet as a class. This will give them an opportunity to get out of their seats and move!

My Students

Do you enjoy attending a six hour lecture where you sit in a stiff chair and listen to an instructor? Children don't enjoy that either! We all learn better when we are actively engaged. Help my students become more active in the classroom by contributing to the purchase of a "magic carpet"!

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low income, public elementary school.

Many of my students face challenges at home, including unemployed parents, broken homes, hunger, and transient lifestyles, yet they strive to be successful in the classroom. My students are happy when they are at school because they know we are going to have fun while we are learning. My students work hard because they know that I expect everyone to try their very best and that we celebrate those who put forth effort. My students are kind and respectful. My students are also individuals who learn in a variety of ways; some are musical, some are poetic, some are theatrical, others are mathematical, while some prefer to simply listen and observe. Each child is unique, and each is wonderful!

My Project

Children learn in so many different ways, but we know that they do not learn well by sitting in a desk listening to a teacher throughout the day. I try to have my students engaged in activity as much as possible, whether it be group work at their desks, partner or small groups on the floor around the room, or a whole class meeting on the floor. Students are much more involved in these types of activities, meaning more learning is occurring. I currently have two beach chairs, a throw rug, and a 5' x 7' area rug in my room where students can work. My students practically fight to use these areas. Unfortunately, the quality of the rugs I purchased cannot withstand 20+ students on a daily basis. I would like to begin replacing and increasing the areas where students can work by adding a quality rug where my whole class can gather. Students also will go to the rug to work or read with a partner or small group.

It is crucial that students have the opportunity to get up and move throughout the day in order to stay focused and retain the information they are being taught.

A classroom carpet is a space where my students could go to work without being on a cold, dirty floor. It would allow students of various learning styles to work together and be successful. Please consider supporting this project for an awesome group of students!
