Magic Carpet: A Place Where Reading & Problem Solving Starts

My students need a new carpet.

My Students

When you entire our classroom in the morning, you will notice my students squished on a carpet. Although they are attentive, you can tell that they are uncomfortable.

My students live in a very rural community in Mississippi.

They attend a Title I school and 99 percent of them receive a free lunch. Like most six and seven year olds, they love dancing, drawing, running outside, and their personal space. However, students often end up being very close to one another on the carpet where they spend a large amount of time in class. A new carpet is crucial for students to have an enjoyable learning experience. Not only is our current carpet very small, but it also is very worn out. It also has a lining that has given out, so it is very dusty underneath. There are certain stains that have not been able to be cleaned out of the carpet.

My Project

As a result, donating to our classroom to have a new carpet would immensely add to their comfort. My students will sit on the carpet to have meetings, hear new stories, and continue to challenge themselves. Students buckle in for their journeys where they learn about different heroes and class literature stories. It helps them be more empathetic by imagining what the story would be like if they were the main character. They also then can analyze the stories better. Due to our community pow wow meetings, students have become more respectful and expanded their thoughts about the future. Students take ownership of their classroom through the circle time. In the community pow wow, students learn about what it means to be a leader. My students have conversations about how practicing self control has an impact on their lives or how to show better show appreciation to classmates and school staff.

Sitting on the carpet helps my students focus and overall creates a better day.

I know a new carpet would make my students feel very excited to sit on a spacious carpet during story time. It would also help transitions in our classroom go faster and increase learning time. The class can continue to have conversations about self control, respect, discipline, and ambition. These are values that I hope they take with them to second grade and beyond.
