Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every first grader is a scientist waiting to happen! They live for discovery and literally gasp with delight when they participate in hands-on science investigations. The cost of many of these materials many times exceeds our school budget and there is the challenge!
I have a classroom of curious first graders waiting to get their hands dirty with science!
The diversity in my classroom is huge ranging from autism to gifted--each one of them loving the challenge of science investigations. I have found that these hands-on activities are motivating for all learners. They allow for each individual to make discoveries appropriate to their level of learning. Our school embraces the scientific process and we begin even in our preschool program inviting that curiosity that is involved with hands-on learning. With the state of the economy, these experiences have become less frequent due to the cost of science materials. My students light up at the mention of science, and if experiments, manipulatives, or hands-on equipment are involved there are actual squeals of delight!
My Project
If I am provided with these materials, I will be able to transform an empty back counter into a science lab! Curious first graders will be given the opportunity to perform science investigations instead of just reading about them. Students will be able to explore with a microscope, watch the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies, create volcanic eruptions, and choose from a variety of other science projects. Critical thinking skills will be put to the test as they grab their science journals and learn to put their observations and actions into real life play. They can test their questions and hypotheses with items such as magnets. Their hands will lead the way on this one!
Think of your own child.
Remember the days of true experimentation? Did it involve something from the kitchen or the backyard? How many hours could they keep their attention focused on an activity that delighted their imaginations? Hands on science in the classroom seems to close the gap between above level learners and below level learners. They all come together in one mad lab to collaborate on scientific discoveries. The excitement trickles over into our literature and writing as well.
