I have a classroom of curious first graders waiting to get their hands dirty with science! The diversity in my classroom is huge ranging from autism to gifted--each one of them loving the challenge of science investigations. I have found that these hands-on activities are motivating for all learners. They allow for each individual to make discoveries appropriate to their level of learning. Our school embraces the scientific process and we begin even in our preschool program inviting that curiosity that is involved with hands-on learning. With the state of the economy, these experiences have become less frequent due to the cost of science materials. My students light up at the mention of science, and if experiments, manipulatives, or hands-on equipment are involved there are actual squeals of delight!
