My Students

My approach to teaching is to get to know the students as best I can by understanding their strengths and weaknesses, the ways they learn best, and what motivates them. My role as an educator is to provide them tools and support so that they can achieve their goals.

My classroom is made up of diverse learners who came to me at different ability levels, work at different paces, and have different motivations.

My students attend school regularly to find a safe and happy environment in the school and my classroom. Our school promotes and rewards positive behavior through a PBIS behavior monitoring program and through campaigns such as “Be a Buddy.” My students are all eager to learn although some are more outward with their enthusiasm for school than others. One of our missions at the school is getting to know the students as best we can so that we understand their interests and what drives them. This knowledge helps me establish strong relationships especially with the children who may be reluctant to let others in.

My Project

Recently we were given 5 iPads for students to use. The problem is I cannot bring them to the classroom until we have a safe place to store them. iPads are expensive technology which need to be protected in a physical space which can be locked. Logistically I also need an easy and manageable way to keep them charged so that they are ready for when students need to use them. Technology in the classroom is one tool that allows me to meet the needs of all my learners. Right now I use the two classroom computers as an early finisher station. With the iPads, I will be able to better differentiate my instruction. For example I will meet with a group of students to review a concept or teach an advanced skill while the other students are occupied with engaging material appropriate to their ability level

Some of my students don’t have access to iPads at home, so only at school do they have the opportunity to play skill-building games.

With the charging station more students get to use the iPads. They can improve in areas they are struggling independently, not in front of their peers. Students ask me every day if they can stay in for a few minutes to play math games on the computer. Most of all this project allows for students to have more fun while learning.
