Help me give my students a selection of national award-winning books for book clubs, including titles such as A Single Shard, The Giver, and Piecing Me Together.
My students are simply joyful about book clubs. They love reading "like adults". They get such pleasure from selecting their book, planning their schedule, deciding on discussion topics, and having their weekly gathering. In our flexible seating classroom, they can gather at the carpet, around the floor table, or even in the hallway. As their teacher, I love to see them so inspired to read.
My students deserve to have a quality selection of award winning books to get them truly thrilled about reading.
Book clubs already have them engaged but when the books are high quality and have the awards to back them up, it raises the level of our book clubs from simply fun to a life altering experience. My students love when they have an emotional response to their book or when they feel changed after reading a book. Award winning literature can do that to a reader.
I love when my students finish a book and cannot stop talking about it. Our children are so rooted in technology these days. It is so refreshing to see them moved to tears, anger, laughter and other deep emotions by the experience of sharing reading. In a world where graphic novels have taken over, I yearn for a return to the classic novel. Please help me bring these materials to my students. Let them enjoy these books and truly experience the escape that can be found in a good book.
