Macroinvertebrates Resource Guides

Help me give my students a resource when studying macroinvertebrates they have collected from two local creeks, in order to study creek quality prior to releasing trout they raise in the classroom.

My Students

My kids are rural kids that like an opportunity to learn in different ways, whether it's outdoors or exploring models to learn about science. I love that my students are curious and want to do projects that allow them to dig right in! They love to learn about science in a fun, creative ways.

My Project

Starting out immediately in the fall, we begin a study of macroinvertebrates in two local watersheds. On two different field days, they collect their own macroinvertebrates to identify and study. The students learn about their unique characteristics and start learning about how an organism's structures and functions aid in the unique way they survive. They each pick their own macroinvertebrate to do a more detailed study.

This resource will give them a way to learn about their specific macroinvertebrates, as well as aid in identification with its unique pictures and information.

The one copy I have is usually well sought after while identifying and learning more about macroinvertebrates. I will often catch my students getting totally lost in the pages, reading about all the different macroinvertebrates.

We later use this information about macroinvertebrates to calculate the biotic index and determine creek health for the release of rainbow trout we have raised in the classroom through a program called, Minnesota Trout in the Classroom.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
