My students need access to The Stock Market Game to increase their knowledge in math, reading, vocabulary, current events and research skills using a real world application.
Creative energy radiates from my students the moment they enter the classroom. They eagerly await each day's challenge. As a teacher of gifted learners from all walks of life, my students bring their own unique abilities, ideas, and learning styles into every discussion and/or task.
I try to make my classroom a place where my students feel confident in who they are no matter where they come from, a place they can comfortably take risks and try new things, a place where their creativity is highly valued, and a place where they feel loved and accepted for who they are.
Our school is identified as a Title I school and I have students from both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum in my class.
My students enjoy spending time with our classroom family. They love discussion, debate, working together, challenging each other, and encouraging their friends in class.
My Project
Students will begin by learning strategies to make wise choices best suited for their own well-being. Students will select their own focus area of interest to research throughout the year. As they research they will have certain components to learn more about in their field of interest (careers, education required, businesses related to, experts, financial impact, etc.)
Throughout the unit, the concept of economics, money management, and investment will be covered in connection with their own interest area.
They will then be able to see how intertwined money is in the real world outside of school. Students will then form teams of similar interests and begin “The Stock Market Game” running January-March of 2018. They will conduct research, buy and sell stocks, and keep accurate records of their transactions. They will first try to find stock most closely connected to their own field of interest, but will discuss and determine if those are wise choices to invest in.
I will utilize The Stock Market Game Live Binder for activities. Students will be interviewing professionals (local business owners, stockbrokers) throughout their studies via email and phone calls. Students will also participate in finance activities connected to entrepreneurship and service learning.
Playing the Stock Market Game will teach the students more about how money affects the world around them. They will also learn about how to invest and grow their own financial opportunities now and in the future. Through participation in The Stock Market Game students will increase their knowledge in math, reading, writing, vocabulary, current events, and research skills. They will also learn team skills such as collaboration and compromise.
