Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are diverse, inquisitive, and love hands-on projects. They are passionate and resilient, not defined by the many socioeconomic challenges in our neighborhoods. They do not shrink from the rigor of their studies and the high expectations of their teachers. Our diverse students are hungry to learn and to expand their understanding of the world.
Projects like this one that combine the passion of our librarians with student curiosity and collaboration are extremely important in relationship building and creating a positive learning experience.
They come to school eager to participate in engaging activities and curriculum. Having lunchtime maker space activities in the library will help diversify their interests in collaboration and creativity by creating STEAM projects. It will give our students a greater opportunity to have hands-on experiences outside of the classroom within a school setting.
My Project
Many of our students come into the library at lunch time. Many come to read books or use technology, but others simply enjoy the time for fellowship and socializing. They also, however, are excitable and sometimes rambunctious. Having some directed activities such as origami instructional books/paper, paper bag projects, paper airplanes, or chess games would be a great way to channel their energy. Having KEVA planks and a K'NEX Maker Kit would help some students who enjoy open-ended creativity.
By funding our project, you will be giving students a safe place at lunch to socialize while also continuing their learning.
Our students have a strong desire to grow their skills. Why not give them a chance to express their passion through STEAM collaboration with lunch time activities designed for learning and exploration? By giving them supplies for a maker space, we intend on doing just that.
