Lunchtime Book Club: Wild Readers Escape!

My Students

One of my favorite aspects of being a school librarian at the largest elementary school in our county is the ability to connect with so many students in the course of one week. This year, the demand for a Lunchtime Book Club was high. All students in 3rd-5th grade participated in a Book Tasting activity, where they had the opportunity to read a wide variety of chapter books reaching across several genres. In the end, they voted on their favorite book. Each grade level's favorite book would turn into the book I would read to them during our separate grade-level Lunchtime Book Clubs.

Peter Brown's The Wild Robot was resoundingly the most favorite book for our amazing 3rd graders!

My Project

At the beginning of October, I started my Lunchtime Book Club with 3rd grade. Every Friday, thirty-four 3rd grade students and I come together in the Media Center. They eat lunch and listen intently as I read The Wild Robot aloud. We will finish our book club next month, and my students are hungry for more of Peter Brown's story. Roz has captured their hearts, and they so earnestly want to follow her as she leaves the island she called home, plotting a plan to escape from her captors and return back to her version of normalcy.

Our time together as a book club has almost ended, but with your help, I could allow these voracious, wild readers to remain just that--wild and totally crazy about reading a story that, to them, has not quite ended yet.

By providing my 3rd Grade Lunchtime Book Club students with their own copy of The Wild Robot Escapes, Peter Brown's beloved robot, Roz, can live on, wildly, in the hearts of my students for years to come.
