Students come into the library once a week for 35 minutes as part of their grade level's Enrichment rotation. I reserve the last 10-15 minutes of our time together for checking out books and reading independently around the library with a stuffed animal book buddy. At our school, we work on being Positive, Accountable, and Working toward Success (PAWS). If students work hard and demonstrate PAWS behavior in the library, they are rewarded by being allowed to spread out around the library during independent reading time. Since students have to earn the privilege to read around the library in a comfortable spot (based on behavior during the lesson), being granted that freedom is something that my students work toward each week. My students LOVE this! They love being able to sit with their book buddy and cozy up with their library book before leaving. However, we are very limited for comfortable reading spaces. We are in desperate need of a carpet for one of the largest areas in our library that students can sit on during independent reading time. Right now, this space is severely unutilized as a comfortable space for students to read because there is not a designated space for them to sit, leaving most of my students having to sit in hard chairs. My main priority and wish is for the library to be inviting, safe space for my students to read. My students deserve a library that is equipped with fun and comfortable reading spaces. How can I show them that I care about them as readers if I do not provide an enjoyable spot for free reading? It is my dream that this new colorful rug will create a more inviting space for our library, and motivate students to want to read.
