Lucky Broken Girl, Overcoming Obstacles!

My students need a class set of Lucky Broken Girl, so when I do read-aloud, partner-read, independent reading, etc., each student can have a copy. This book is cross-curricular and will instill valuable lessons on overcoming obstacles.

My Students

I work at a school where the needs of students are extremely high. We have a population of high-poverty, high-refugee students. We are 100% free lunch, and also provide free breakfast, afternoon snack, and after-school full meal for the students that attend our free after school program. We have students who live with extended family members, in homeless shelters, or friends.

Despite the hardships and struggles that the majority of these kids face, the love and kindness shown between them is phenomenal.

These students have learned to work together, to be a team. I love the fact that they don't use their hardships as a crutch. I tell my students every year that my goal is to teach them how to be citizens within their community who lend a hand, don't pass judgement, and are constantly looking out for each other. I tell them that no matter what speed-bumps come up along their road, to never give up. These students learn to believe in themselves and their abilities and I just love knowing that I am a part of that.

My Project

With a class set of Lucky Broken Girl, I will be able to reach students in writing, reading, and social studies, through the use of this book. I'll also be able to teach them valuable life lessons, which is my ultimate goal as a teacher, they will use throughout their whole life.

Lucky Broken Girl will touch the hearts of my students as well as teach them that no matter how hard a struggle may feel at the time, they have the ability to overcome it.

This book shows readers that life gives us only what we can handle. It is meant to teach us lessons to help us grow.
