Low-Shelf Esteem: Reaching for Books!

Help me give my students access to books by providing them with new bookshelves. Our current bookshelves are too high and hinder students' ability to choose books independently.

My Project

Like most classrooms, my students are diverse in their backgrounds, culture, interests, and reading abilities. I have hundreds of books for them to choose from to match their needs. The problem is the bookshelves in my classroom are hard for my students to reach: if they want a book, they have to climb onto the counter to look at it! Not only is this dangerous, but it makes students less willing to try out a new book or see what's available. I feel like a gatekeeper for the books instead of a steward of stories.

The bookshelves I'm requesting aren't just pieces of furniture; they're gateways to knowledge, imagination, and self-discovery for my students.

By having accessible bookshelves, every student can easily explore the world of literature, finding stories that resonate with their interests and experiences. These shelves will foster independence, allowing them to confidently select books at their own pace. For students who struggle with reading, the prospect of selecting a book from high shelves can be daunting and discouraging. Lower bookshelves remove this barrier and create a more comfortable and inviting reading environment.

Our books shouldn't just be on display: they should be in students' hands, being examined, tested, and tried out. When the books are out of their reach, it takes away their autonomy. Help me make my books tools for students to use and not just decoration.
