With the paper and books you funded through DonorsChoose, we read The Complete Story of Sadako Sasaki together and learned about Sadako's life, her courage, and the powerful symbol of the thousand paper cranes.\r\n\r\nUsing the materials from your grant, our students created more than 1,000 origami cranes—each student learning how to fold cranes and making an average of 20 of their own. These cranes now fill a large and beautiful display at our school, accompanied by a 16-foot mural featuring imagery from both Hiroshima, Japan and Salem, Oregon. Seeing their individual cranes come together as one powerful installation gave students a deep sense of pride and connection.\r\n\r\nBeyond learning how to fold paper, students explored Japanese culture, reflected on themes of peace and resilience, and connected with others around the world through the Peace Crane Project. Because of your generosity, I was able to bring in tools that help students stay focused and successful in class.\r\n\tShortly after receiving your donations, I was offered a position as an instructional mentor at my school. That meant I transitioned out of teaching 7th grade language arts and into a role where I support other teachers to improve their teaching strategies. So while I was not able to set up a break space in my classroom for students, I used your donations to create a break space for other teachers. \r\n\tOne teacher had created a break space corner, but the addition of the timer allowed students to monitor their use of the space. They loved the dial function and that the timer was magnetic. The Needoh stress ball has been popular in that corner. Students were taught the expectations for time to reset and how to use the fidget effectively before returning to work in their groups. \r\n For example, I've visited classrooms where students gather around the giant Post-it notes during group projects, eagerly writing down ideas and moving them around the room. Or students take turns writing their ideas on the poster to share with each other. \r\n Every student has their own Chromebook this year, and our classrooms don't have enough outlets for students to keep their computers charged for activities. Teachers have shared how much easier it is to manage charging devices with the new power strips. And the students like how sleek the charging towers look. \r\n Even though I've stepped into a new role, your gift is having a ripple effect: it's not just one classroom benefiting, but many. Students are continuing to use these resources to collaborate, stay organized, and regulate themselves throughout the day.\r\n Thank you for believing in our school and in the power of small tools to make a big difference.\r\n\r\nWith endless thanks, \r\nKatie Garcia","fullyFundedDate":1744079335386,"projectUrl":"project/a-charged-up-classroom-keeping-students/9192928/","projectTitle":"A Charged-Up Classroom: Keeping Students Engaged & Organized","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8692911"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88128","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":735,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":2,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"21.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":76.3,"schoolId":88128,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Leslie Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Leslie Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/salem-keizer-school-district-24j/leslie-middle-school/88128"}
