Loving Literature Circles!

My students need Henry and Mudge book sets for their first grade literature circles and discussions.

My Students

Have you ever heard a group of first graders dive deep into literature, discussing their thoughts, connections, and ideas with each other? I'm lucky to say I hear meaningful literature talks on a daily basis. My first graders love to read books together in a literature circle.

My students are from a diverse urban area.

Our school district has made national news due to their financial budget crisis. I currently have thirty students in my class. Our school is a Title I school and all of the students receive free lunch. There are forty languages being spoken in the homes of our students. Most of my students speak another language at home. A number of those families have difficulty assisting their child with homework because they do not understand English. We are not receiving money for supplies from the school district which makes teaching difficult. Students see school as a safe place where they can rely on predictable routines and are excited about learning. Their hard work motivates me to seek out the very best opportunities for them.

My Project

Every morning, my students start the day with reading. They get excited to dig into their Henry and Mudge books and share with each other new findings from the story. I have created literature circle packets to guide my students' journey through this series of books. These literature sets will enable my students to learn a wide variety of common core standards by being apart of valuable literature circles. Literature circles are a fun place for cooperative learning where students help one another understand text and make sense of it. They facilitate the opportunity for students to use one another as resources and become independent learners. My students teach each other good reading habits, cheering on their classmates as they become stronger readers.

These materials would create a positive impact in my classroom.

These books would allow my students to continue this influential journey with reading and with each other. My readers will have continuous practice with phonics, sight words and reading skills. With all of these new Henry and Mudge book titles, my students will have more opportunity for success as confident readers.
