My Students

In my classroom, I grow readers who can never get enough of words on a page!

The sweet children I serve grow up without the advantages that you and I might have experienced.

Despite that, they are ravenous learners! So many of them soak up classroom life, and even beg to stay after school for an extra tutoring session or to help out in the room. I'm always looking for meaningful activities that they can do that won't feel like busy-work.

My Project

My vision for this brand-new school year is to jump-start a book club! Many adults join book clubs in their free time, and I think our students would eat this up! I've chosen two books to study that my students can truly relate to, either from personal experience or someone close to their hearts. The books, Red Thread Sisters and Almost Home, have themes of homelessness, foster care, and finding homes and families. In classic book club style, students will read and discuss how the books relate to their own experiences. This is not a textbook vocabulary and comprehension lesson! We'll be diving into meaningful texts, expressing thoughts and opinions, and sharing life together. We will talk about lines that they find particularly riveting, and use the highlighters to mark those words as they see fit.

I am excited for my children to further see that reading can open up worlds to you!

They will not be reading for a grade at all, but for the pleasure of reading a story that is close to their hearts. Thank you for sharing in my vision to create a group of voracious readers who are reading for a purpose, and a club of young people making meaning of their lives together.
