This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are voracious readers. They think deeply about things and are constantly challenging my own thinking. Fourth grade is a STAAR-prep heavy grade, but love of reading is something that I strive to give to my students. Now that STAAR is almost here and gone, we are ready to leave passages and multiple choice questions behind and dive into my favorite thing: a novel study!

I selected Island of the Blue Dolphins for our novel study because it is a story of the resilience of the marginalized - a child (a girl!) left behind to fend for herself for over a decade.

It was a story that I read in elementary school and has stuck with me ever since. I am so excited to embark on this literary adventure with my students.

We will be studying the novel and creating an interactive notebook to collect our learning.
