My students are from a rural, poverty-stricken town in central West Virginia. Many are being raised by grandparents due to drug addiction in the community. Ten out of sixteen are below grade level in reading. Due to their deficiencies in reading, many also struggle in other academic areas. Although they seem to have it rough, they live life to the fullest. They are happy, energetic, loving and love to read. They always try their hardest and want to do their best.
These materials will make a difference in my students’ learning by letting them be engineers, construction workers and scientists during inside recess. My students will be able to exhibit skills such as teamwork, problem solving, imagination and creativity as they “play.” They will be able to make towns with fire departments, police stations, farmers markets and more. There are no boundaries in where their imaginations can take them.
Legos are also great because it appeals to both young and old.
If we receive these, people may see the teacher (me) on the floor building with the kids. There is satisfaction in seeing the end result. On the other hand, there is joy in starting over again to build something new.
