Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a high poverty area where students have grown up with many hardships. The majority of my students are Hispanic with English as their second language. Ninety-eight percent of our students qualify for free lunch.
My students come to my class wanting a safe environment from hardships they may be dealing with outside of school!
These 5th graders know, though, that my classroom is a safe place for them to be. Each one of them is a caring student who holds high values of respect and responsibility. All my students are very enthusiastic to learn and grow their minds for their futures! My goal is to continue giving my students this safe, comfortable learning environment to continue their learning.
My Project
My school does not have a library within it. Most families at my school do not feel safe to sign up for a library card. Many of them do not even have books at home because of finances. This means the books in my room are the books my students will be reading.
Reading is important to me and my students see this and wanting to love reading as much as much.
That is why I am requesting titles such as The Getaway, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Box of Books, Mystery Club (Mr. Wolf's Class #2), A Wrinkle in Time, and The Lightning Thief.
I started the school year with my students saying they do not like reading. A month in, my students are reading many books in my classroom. I want this to continue but I need newer books and books that were well loved last year.
My students are allowed to borrow my books to read at home. Most usually finish their book and switch for a new one the next day. I want to continue this and grow the love of reading.
