Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach a very diverse kindergarten English Language Learner class at a public school in Los Angeles. The majority of my students come from low-income households and are either new to the United States or have only lived here a few years and are learning the language. This is one of many challenges faced by my students. Despite the challenges they face, my students are eager and excited to learn.

I have students from all over the globe here and we love sharing our culture and different ways of life.

Learning about the importance of acceptance is wonderful at this age and I am always looking for ways to celebrate families. Having personal mirrors will help my students understand that despite our differences, we are all lovely human beings. At the same time, learning to love and accept self is something I prioritize in my classroom.

I would love to have a small center set up so students can look in the mirror and create a self-portrait. I will hang their portrait in the classroom using the mounting tabs so that we can celebrate each child's culture. I will use the tongue depressors to write each child's name. Then, I will draw one name per day and the class will have a chance to orally express something they admire about that child. The clothespins will be sent home so that the students can work with their parents to learn about their personal ancestry. Together, they will write their native language, country of origin, traditional meal, and any other important family facts on a clothespin. In class, we will discuss similarities and differences.
