Help me give my students continued reading development in their home language. Language acquisition should continue in their first language as well as in English through independent reading for pleasure.
My kids are new to the US or first generation Americans learning English as a Second Language. They are curious, spirited and eager to learn about the American culture, but at the same time, they are sometimes shy to jump in and make new friends but prefer to be more observant when they first join our school.
In my class, we celebrate and explore the home cultures of each student.
They enjoy teaching each other greetings and common phrases from their home languages. My students are always quick to help one another understand key concepts and work with others for the common goal of being successful.
My Project
Learning English is an important part of my students' education in the U.S., however, they should also be maintaining their home language, and one of the best ways to do that is through leisure reading books that interest them in their native language.
By hosting a multilingual library, it demonstrates to all students a school culture of diversity and inclusiveness.
This year, my school has launched a designed and sacred reading time and day, during which all students, school wide, are engaging in silent, sustained reading. Research shows that strong reading skills can lead to success in school and later in life. Informed students become informed adults who make wise choices in the future.
