Help me give my students tangible rewards for meeting their behavior goals as we journey through 100% virtual return to the classroom including Doodle Boards, Play-Doh, and more.
I am a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teacher in our Behavior Learning Community Classroom. This is where our students with behavior goals receive their social skills instruction and behavioral supports throughout the day. We are an inclusive middle school, which means all of our students with special education services receive their grade level content in the general education classroom.
When I became a BLC teacher, I quickly learned that students with behavior goals need two things: love and motivation.
The "love" comes from supportive adults in our building. They are always checking in on students... to make sure students understand their academic expectations, to provide a brain break if needed, and to process through any conflicts. The motivation piece ideally would come from within the students themselves. Many of our students are still working to do this, so we provide a token economy system. When students make good choices, they earn points. The points can then be used to purchase reward items. This helps the student see that hard work pays off! It also helps them to feel good about the choices they are making.
My Project
In our classroom, our students are given points for positive behaviors. There are many ways students can earn rewards, a few of them including being in virtual class on time, sharing out answers in class, helping a peer when they drop their books, asking to take a brain break appropriately, being a risk-taker, advocating for their own needs, practicing skills taught in social skills class.
Larger point values are given when students meet their IEP behavior goals for the week!
Yay! What a great reason to celebrate!
The students will be given at least one opportunity each day to use their points to purchase reward items. As they purchase items, I will place them into a plastic container for them. The rewards will be delivered to the students' homes every 2-3 weeks. (We will be following ALL COVID-19 safety precautions. As hard as it will be for us, will not be entering the home, giving hugs, or even sticking around to say hi!) We know that waiting two weeks can feel like a long time to wait for something we have worked so save up points for! I will send updated photos of the students' reward buckets to them at least 3 times per week.
