Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher who services kindergarten and first grade students with a variety of abilities! I currently serve as an inclusion teacher in three diverse classrooms! I run to and from each classroom nearly every hour. But... this is just part of my awesome job!
My three classrooms differ in almost every aspect; one class is bilingual, two classes are focusing on personalized learning, one class is part of the "science on the go" program; and these are just programming differences!
The students in each class are equally as unique! Each child has different interests, abilities, social emotional growth and academic strengths. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to regulate their behavior and monitor their personal successes.
Each child is unique and it is my goal to highlight their personal strengths and success within the academic and social setting!
My Project
It is my goal to build a robust, high-quality classroom library that will impact student achievement. So with this in mind, my third DonorsChoose project is an attempt to do just that. Students that are exposed to an extensive, exemplary classroom library read more, connect more, develop positive attitudes toward reading, and end up reading for deeper meaning and purpose.
A successful and effective classroom library has the following: A minimum of 750 books in good condition, around thirty books per student, a rich variety of genres: realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, biography and autobiography, stories, classics, myths and legends, picture books, reference, poetry, comic books and graphic novels, and more.
Now… my library is just beginning. I am lacking in several areas. And I want to change that. I want thirty books at a minimum for each child. And I want my students to be able to access a variety of books, at varying levels of diverse topics.
Which is why I am appealing to you… the donor.
These books will enhance the print-rich classroom that I am striving to create. My classroom library is a place of solace, and often times a place to calm down, they read to partners there, they complete work there, and it is where they read independently!
These books will be used in varying ways in my classroom. They will be used for read alouds, they will be used as mentor texts for both reading and writing, they will be available for students to read with partners and they can be chosen as the book they wish to read independently.
Please consider gifting my students with a robust library and access to award winning texts and authors. Thank you for your generosity.
