My students need 40 hardcover copies of The Fault in Our Stars so that we will be able to read this high-interest book in connection with Romeo and Juliet.
Many of my students share a rural, high-poverty background with over half of our population qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. For many of my students, school is a safe-haven of consistency, structure, and caring that they may not get on a regular basis at home. These students are curious, compassionate, caring people who want to improve the outlook of their lives.
My students are itching to show the world what they know and what they can learn.
They are creative, artistic, and energetic, but they are also often deeply practical with very few scales over their eyes to keep them from their understanding of reality. They need caring, love, and compassion to help them understand that their dreams are attainable and that they are worth it.
My Project
We are requesting 40 copies of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars that my freshmen will read in an effort to compare this novel to Shakespeare's classic, Romeo and Juliet. Both stories revolve around themes of love, death, and fate, and together, make both stories more compelling.
The Fault in Our Stars is a high-interest novel that will help make the themes Shakespeare brings about more accessible.
Not only does it have abundant literary connections that can make the reading more rich and full, but it also presents complex ideas that will promote critical thinking and require my students to question their own beliefs about what it means to love, to live, and to die.
