We are requesting 40 copies of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars that my freshmen will read in an effort to compare this novel to Shakespeare's classic, Romeo and Juliet. Both stories revolve around themes of love, death, and fate, and together, make both stories more compelling. The Fault in Our Stars is a high-interest novel that will help make the themes Shakespeare brings about more accessible. Not only does it have abundant literary connections that can make the reading more rich and full, but it also presents complex ideas that will promote critical thinking and require my students to question their own beliefs about what it means to love, to live, and to die.
