This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sight words are the most frequently used words in the English language. We see them everywhere around us. Sight words are words that we know automatically, but what happens when we don't? My students struggle with learning sight words, which affects their ability to read.

I have the privilege of reaching a wide range of extraordinary students.

I teach Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd graders with varying disabilities that affect their learning. Our school is a Title 1 and Provision II school located in Florida. As a Provision school, our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is the only "inner city" school in the county and our students face many challenges outside of school. A number of our students are FIT families, or Families in Transition--which essentially means they are homeless.

My Project

My students are struggling readers who do not have a solid foundation for identifying sight words. Sight words or high-frequency words are words that appear most often in text. Students begin learning these words in kindergarten and the list of "words they should know" quickly progresses as they move from grade to grade. With the materials I requested my students will be able to "play" and learn at the same time. I am asking for multi-level sight word board games and sight word bingo. I am also requesting manipulatives such as tubs of sight word and books that will allow my students to practice identifying and forming sentences with sight words. Lastly, I am requesting a book to guide me through teaching sight words and developing engaging activities for my students.

I want my students to fall in love with reading!

In order for them to do so they first have to learn to read. Engaging in activities that help them learn sight words will help build the foundation for reading that will allow them to be successful.
