I am so fortunate to teach in an amazing school in a wonderful small town of under 10,000 people. We are housed in a beautiful, historic building in the heart of the town. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school is considered a low socio-economic school, but we are rich in tradition and enthusiasm for learning.
This has been a year of transition for us.
We have acquired two new administrators and many new teachers. Together, we are working to not only keep tradition alive, but become even better. The new ideas breathe new life into a school that was already thriving. I cannot wait to see all that we will accomplish this year.
My Project
Louisiana hosts the Young Readers' Choice Awards each year. Each year they select 12 books for the children to read and then go into a real voting machine to vote on the best book. These results are gathered throughout the state and the winner is published. Sadly, we have not had a librarian for years and the library has been locked up. The library is just a casualty of budget cuts and that makes it difficult to keep this very necessary component of education alive. We have discovered through research that active school libraries can boost standardized test scores by as much as ten percent.
Our principal wants to bring our library back to life.
Because our district does not have the funds to breathe life back into the library, we are dependent on parent volunteers for staffing and generous donors for stocking the shelves. Our hope is that we can show the district and state how much of an impact a library has on our young learners. Once we prove how valuable the library is, maybe we will be able to convince everyone else how important it is to invest in reading. Reading for fun is the absolute best way to improve reading skills. Libraries make it possible for children to explore what they enjoy reading.
The books in this project are all titles from the Young Readers' Choice Awards nominee list. Your donation would allow our students to not only read for fun, but exercise their civic duty by voting for a favorite book in a real voting booth. Thank you for your consideration.
