My Students

My students are primarily urban students of low income, but have the biggest hearts of anyone!

As an arts high school, they're passionate about their art and it is common to hear other languages and singing in the halls and find random art work on my desk at the end of the day.

Unfortunately, with living in the urban area, we have some of the problems that are commonly associated with students of low income. This means that for some of my students, the ability to read lost a few steps along the way.

My Project

My students really like to read; but we have a problem. The books in the classroom library are outdated and no longer hold any relevance to their lives or their interests. They have been begging for new books for months. With new, high interest books in the classroom library, my students will want to pick up a book instead of their cell phone. My classroom hosts a variety of reading levels due to the Reading Intervention classes, and these books will allow for these students to find a book that interests them, but will also be in their reading lexile level.
