My Project

They key to improving literacy is daily independent reading, but how can we expect students to be engaged with the text if it is not accessible and representative of them? By having a section of the classroom library dedicated to multilingual and minority texts, I hope to furnish students with texts that not only captivate but also challenge them on an academic and personal level.

I am a teacher at a wonderfully diverse school, and I am determined to revitalize our classroom library to better meet the needs of all students.

Thirty percent of my students are not native English speakers. Reading a book in their language is not just a luxury--it is a lifeline. Additionally, half of my students are African American and long to see their own experiences represented in the books they read. The goal of the project is to provide these students with books that celebrate their stories, their cultures, and their voices.
