I teach a combination class of at-risk students and special needs students. A majority of my at-risk students are English language learners. Parents are required to read 100 books to their children at home for children to be in our program. Parents are also asked to attend at least 4 school events. Our parents have trouble completing the reading portion because we do not have an adequate supply of Spanish books and most of our parents are not fluent in English.
I feel it is important for my students to hear stories in their native language as well as in English. Providing their parents with a good up to date take home library will help them meet their goal while we share the same books in English here at school. I have found some good books at Big Lots and other discount stores in English/Spanish but I can not afford a large class set.
By providing books in English and Spanish, we will not only be helping the students but our parents will be practicing their English as well. Many of the parents have indicated they they prefer these books so they can make sure they are reading correctly to their children. They want to be good parents, and I want to help them achieve this goal.
Your help will give my parents the boost they need to read. English language learners must learn 25 new words each day throughout their school career to compete with the middle class English learner. Help me give them a jump start on learning!
