Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have strong work ethics, as well as strong ties to their cultures. The Santa Maria community is also strongly family-oriented, and parents work hard in order to provide a good education and bright futures for their children. In the 2017-2018 school year of my middle school, 886 students out of 949 are Hispanic and 34.7% are English Language Learners (ELLs); 885 of the 949 are socio-economically disadvantaged (California Department of Education, 2018).
This year, I have 8th-grade Benchmark and Honors English classes with ELL students mixed in.
Although these students will have different skill levels, they have personalities and desires that are very much the same. They support each other and build a strong community in their classrooms. They are also resilient and adaptive young people who have inventive minds.
My Project
Lord of the Flies is a grade-level text for 8th grade. It goes along with a narrative unit and helps students understand characterization and suspense.
The narrative unit will be in the beginning of the year and starting with a graphic novel can help build endurance in students, especially English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities.
Having visuals will help those students understand the novel better, as well as help create interest. Some students feel that since they are not "good" readers that reading is not fun or interesting.
This particular version of Lord of the Flies is special, which means I have to fundraise with multiple projects. Additionally, it means that students can see how people can respond to literature-- not only with reading, but with art as well.
