Help us get fleece, batting, bead filling, thread, ribbon, embroidery razor, bobbin organizers, scale, and a spool holder to make community service projects.
My student Faith is in our course College and Life Prep. She has left behind her past tendencies of being a quiet observer to become a great leader this year. She takes charge of situations and recognizes when there are necessary changes. Most importantly, she pays attention to the things she and her peers can positively impact to make the class better for all. As a result of this leadership, she suggested writing a Donors Choose project for our class for supplies which will help the students complete projects for our community.
My students love one of the oldest STEM methods around: sewing. They have been practicing the skills of measuring, designing, and stitching. They also work as a team to innovate Empathy projects for individuals in their lives and our community. We want to take this a step further, and reach out to those in our community in need. Students will look for problems in our community and work to apply their skills in sewing to solve the problem in an innovative way. Already, students have come up with the idea of making hats and mittens or stuffed animals for kids in our community or at our local women's shelter.
In Their Own Words
Currently, we are learning the basics in making pillows, bags and hacky sacks, which with two college and life prep classes takes up a lot of stuffing. We are eager to learn more and would love to learn how to make more complex things such as stuffed animals, dog beds, or even heating pads. I’d ultimately love to make different kinds of pillows and donate them to the women's shelter in town!
I am a highly motivated student and LOVE learning new things that I will be able to use later on in life! In this class so far I show leadership in cleaning up with my class after we are done with our projects, and when we get stuffing I keep track of who paid for the stuffing, and who still needs to pay! I will also show leadership with this project by making sure to explain completely about why we’d love to get funded and continuing any effort I can put forth to get it funded!
This project is important to me because in such a short time of 2 months I have learned about sewing machines, Embroidery machines, and the ladder stitch. To further explain the ladder stitch is useful when needing to sew without the thread showing, like when sewing jeans or pillows! With these new skills my peers and I have learned basic necessary skills that we will need for life! With these new skills I now know how to make a pillow, heating pad, and more! With this project getting funded it will give us the ability to learn how to make more complex items to expand what we can do as adults. We will also be able to help out people in our community who are in need.
