My Project

For many of my sixth grade students, this year is their first opportunity to be in a science classroom every day - it's a very pivotal and exciting time for them! It's pretty exciting for me as their teacher too, as I get to watch them learn about the world around them, and begin to critically observe their surroundings.

I like to think that my most important job this year is to help students get engaged in and excited about science!

Long past the time they've forgotten what mitochondria does in a cell, they'll remember the excitement they felt seeing one of their own cells for the first time, the triumph they experienced when their engineering project withstood all of the tests we threw at it, even the quiet contentment they felt when they noticed something they'd never seen before or made a new connection to something they already knew, and were able to document it in their nature journal.

We're currently studying cells and body systems. I'm asking for a really good microscope and a collection of prepared slides, as well as a few other cell-related items. I'm hoping my students will appreciate the beauty in the microscopic, and be motivated to explore more deeply.
