Students read closely, annotate meaningful passages, write analytical \"jots,\" and discuss their ideas with classmates. They use evidence from the text to explore characters, conflicts, pivotal moments, and recurring topics, while also connecting what they read to their own lives and the world around them. These books help students strengthen their comprehension and analytical thinking while building the background knowledge they need to understand complex stories.\r\n\r\nMany students have been especially fascinated by books connected to World War II and Chinese American history in the early 1900s. The historical settings immediately capture their curiosity, prompting them to ask thoughtful questions and seek a deeper understanding of the time period. (A few actually said, \"Why couldn't we have gotten these earlier? They would have really helped us.\"). I know that these sewing machines will be of great use next year and for years to come.\r\n\r\nEvery year in Drama Tech, I teach a machine sewing unit. The students learn the different parts of the machine, how to thread them, wind a bobbin, and do some basic sewing. Every student creates a sewing project that they can keep (a bag, pouch, apron, wallet, or something more complex if they already have sewing experience). This class will have 30 students this year, so two more sewing machines will really help in providing each student more time on a machine to really practice sewing and work on making a real item from scratch. We also use the machines when we work on plays and need to make a costume or alter costumes for the actors in the acting classes. The amount that students actually learned and absorbed by following Louis Zamperini's story in Unbroken, by going along on the hunt for Adolf Eichmann, by seeing the destruction, death and havoc wreaked by pure corporate greed (looking at you, Radium Dial) - they all walked away from this project strongly recommending their texts to other students. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading happens in a million different ways. Some of it is shared reading with an anchor text. For this particular project, students watched videos and read short articles to build context before diving in to their novel. The background knowledge they gain paired with the strong texts you donated to them made them SO much more knowledgeable about the world around them.
