Looking At The World Through The Eye Of A Lens

My students need a camcorder to critique themselves and peers as they present Congressional Hearings, speeches, reader's theater, and will be utilized many other ways.

My Students

Look at my students giving speeches to their peers. What an exciting moment, one that they will remember forever. Too bad we can't see it later. Every year it's the same excitement and disappointment. The students spend the first semester of school preparing for a Congressional hearing and never see it.

Our school is a relatively new public school in Colorado.

Our school district is the largest in Colorado. The students are located in a diverse neighborhood that includes many Special Education and English Language Learners.

My Project

At our school, we have the second highest Vietnamese population in the district. One of the best strategies for teaching ELL students is using visuals. In sixth grade, the students present different content throughout the year, from a simple "Get to Know Me" Speech to a Congressional Hearing that is assessed by lawyers, House of Representatives and, Senators. A powerful tool is allowing students to critique their own speeches as well as the speeches of others. Having access to watching themselves and critique their speech and language is a wonderful opportunity for students, especially ELL students, and is an authentic way to assess their speeches. A camcorder would be a powerful tool to use within the classroom.

In this day and age, students are so technologically advanced, as a sixth grade teacher, I am constantly trying to find a way to stay ahead of the game.

Students arrive fresh-faced in sixth grade with Youtube, Facebook, and other accounts. In sixth grade, we hope to take the next step and create movies in sixth grade. This camcorder will boost the child's learning experience.
