My Students

Picture this: your hands frame a shot of students in a classroom. As you zoom out and your frame becomes wider, you see engaged students searching for new ways to convey their view of the world to others, combining technical knowledge and artistic expression to capture a moment in time.

I teach a diverse group of students in an ethnically and economically-diverse high school in a remote region of the country.

Our students have a lot of heart, and they express it well in an artistic manner. We offer a few elective art, industrial technology, and applied technology courses, but we need materials to help students master their craft. Many of our students will go on to two and four year universities, but some will continue onto trade school. Whatever their post-secondary pursuits, the technical skills learned in our applied technology and art courses will transform into marketable skills for our students. We live in Hawaii, and photography--be it wedding, nature, or business promotion--is a sought-after and desirable skill for our students to have leaving high school.

My Project

My photography class gives students a chance to hone their skills in a medium that can be used in virtually any career field post-graduation. To do this, we need specific lenses for use in portrait, landscape, and night photography projects. I am asking for one digital camera to add to my other Canon cameras so more students can practice taking various photographs. One of the content standard benchmarks for this course is to master the proper use of digital cameras including a variety of lenses. Students will explore the key elements of the lens, they will learn about various types of lenses and the proper exchange of them on the digital camera as well as the use of them in various types of photography.

In this project, students will learn how to look at the world through a different "lens" or perspective.

For the final product, students will create a slide show portfolio with the pictures showing various ranges of two or more lenses of their choice. Later in a year, they will use photographic equipment to hone the photographic techniques such as composition, lighting, depth of field, and so forth. Through this process, students will learn how to take quality photos.

Being exposed to cutting edge technology in the field of photography will enable my students to become cultured and skilled contributors to business as well as artistic members of society.
