Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

We have a beautiful courtyard area that is currently home to a few items for our students to use - a basketball hoop, some picnic tables, a fitness circuit. However, the whole space lacks color and beauty.

It is our intention to start a small garden and flower bed, along with a raised bed for vegetables and herbs, in the corner near my classroom.

I am hoping that we will be able to start beautifying our courtyard one corner at a time.

The raised bed will allow for us to grow some vegetables - mostly greens and some herbs. I will make these available to students who help in the garden space to take home to use with their families. The rototiller and flower seeds will helps us grow a wildflower garden that will attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, which will be great for the environment in our little courtyard ecosystem!

Also, I have found for me personally, gardening is a great way to work and maintain a good mental balance. This project will help our students learn to work together as a team for a common cause, which is key to social emotional learning. And giving our garden helpers some healthy, nutritious vegetables is a huge bonus!!!
