Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into my ELL class with a smile on their face, excited and ready to learn and face the challenges of today. This is despite the fact that they come from poverty and often times have had traumatic experiences. They're a blend of several languages and ethnicities. This year alone we have students who speak Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Amharic, and whose heritage connects them to Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ukraine, Belarus, Ethiopia, and Russia. And most importantly, they mean the world to me and they know I'll fight for their rights.
English Learners deserve nothing but the best and that means seeing themselves, their families, their culture in books that I choose to incorporate as mentor texts.
These texts could be used during reading groups, writing workshop or when I push in to classrooms.
My Project
Students need to see characters in books that look like themselves or someone in their family. With the addition of these culturally relevant books to my classroom, my students will gain reading skills and appreciation of their own culture as they listen to, read and work with books that feature characters, holidays and examples of things they see at home.
If students see examples of their own culture, they will appreciate the connection and/or learn more because they are bought in to the story.
Additionally, students will have access to growth mindset books. These books will help them learn more which will help them work harder and have greater success in their academic career and hopefully their future.
