This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Aww..I wish my picture wouldn't get messed up in my bookbag." This is a constant statement my kindergarten students muffle whenever I give them back their creative pieces of work. This being a Kindergarten class...art projects are very much a daily occurrence.

I have been teaching Kindergarten for the past 22 years in a very low income neighborhood of New York City.

My classroom consists of 20-25 children who come from all walks of life. Some are of middle class families but for the most part, the children we get are from shelters or the housing projects. We also get many children who are in the foster care systems. BUT with their personal struggles at home their creativity is one to stand in awe of when they are in the classroom. As a kindergarten class, we use many creative outlets so as to have the students express themselves in areas they are not used to at home. Therefore, we create many displays of self portraits and family portraits they are proud of. These projects are placed around the classroom until it is time for us to move on to the next projects. This is where our dilemmas begin.

My Project

By acquiring this laminating machine (unfortunately we do not have a school laminating machine), each child would get an opportunity to have their pieces laminated and taken home with a bit more dignity and respect. Since we have so many children living in shelters and/or foster homes, their art pieces are trashed or just shoved into their book bags and not taken out again or praised. With their pieces laminated, the projects would last longer and really hold up to all the moving around children can do throughout the day and even be praised when they get "home" and show their parents/guardians.

These projects and art pieces these children create become who they are and they in turn, are proud of their work and of their accomplishments.

Please find it in your heart to get us this laminating package. My students as well as their parents will thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
