My Students

My scholars are very energetic, optimistic, and eager readers, with grit that is sure to take them on many flights of fancy as they travel from my room to and through college.

My scholars love to read novels and create stories of their own.

Some of them even make their own little comic books. It brightens my day to see their zest for learning and to see them exploring the possibilities beyond the walls of our classroom. They are truly on the road to becoming lifelong learners and productive citizens in their communities.

My Project

I am in desperate need to update my classroom set of dictionaries. My students are will be taking the NC EOG Standardized Test at the end of this school year. The dictionaries we currently have at our disposal are extremely out of date and falling apart.

While I understand that there are many cheaper options available, I realized, through research and speaking to other ELA teachers, that American Heritage Dictionaries for my students are the way to go.

The main reason that I have chosen these dictionaries is that they define higher-level vocabulary words in a way that greatly helps young students understand.

Along with using the dictionaries on the state test, I will be using these dictionaries to build my students' vocabulary. As a Reading teacher, I've realized the struggles many teachers have faced over the past few years with helping students be successful on the state’s standardized testing. I have been stressing to my students the importance of looking up unfamiliar words.

Aiding my students in improving their vocabulary will greatly help with reading comprehension. Sadly, this is an enormous weakness for my students. Within the few weeks of working with students, I have come to the conclusion that they struggle most with unfamiliar words. I will also be implementing many dictionary skills.
