My students ride busses from all over the city of Houston to attend school in the heart of downtown. They have chosen to attend their high school, the first Energy focused school in the Nation, to be exposed to engineering, robotics and hands-on experience with our city's top industry.
They are a multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-talented group of young people that are passionate about growing their knowledge of the world around them.
Our project-based campus allows these students to learn not only content, but also interpersonal skills and how to advocate for themselves.
My Project
Our school’s mission is to provide interdisciplinary, hands-on learning that involves students in all aspects of the learning process. Students will be able to move beyond worksheets and lectures and apply their learning in real-world projects. In my Pre-Calculus class, my students will research and build working models of objects that travel in a circular motion. I am requesting building supplies to be used in conjunction with knowledge of geometry and trigonometric functions. Students will design and prototype small-scale models with motors we have on campus to grasp the concept of circular motion and how it applies to the real world.
My students will bring trigonometry to life as they wrap their minds around how to build functional 3-D models!
Using CAD software or sketches, they will design and calculate the theoretical area, circumference, and speed of their chosen objects. Then they will build their object using those dimensions and calculate the experimental area, circumference, and speed. The students will concurrently research the history and evolution of their object to create an infographic. Lastly, their objects and infographics will be on display for industry professionals, parents and community members at a public exhibition later this year.
