Our school’s mission is to provide interdisciplinary, hands-on learning that involves students in all aspects of the learning process. Students will be able to move beyond worksheets and lectures and apply their learning in real-world projects. In my Pre-Calculus class, my students will research and build working models of amusement park rides that travel in a circular motion. I am requesting motor sets and building supplies to be used in conjunction with knowledge of geometry and trigonometric functions. Students will design and prototype small-scale models to grasp the concept of circular motion and how it applies to the real world. My students will bring trigonometry to life as they wrap their minds around how to build a functioning amusement park! Using AutoCAD software, they will design and calculate the theoretical area, circumference, and speed of their rides. Then they will build their ride using those dimensions and calculate the experimental area, circumference, and speed. Lastly, their amusement parks will be on display for industry professionals, parents and community members at a public exhibition later this year.
