Lonely LCD Projector Seeks Document Camera

My students need a document camera to keep up with the 21st century and to benefit from resources that only a document camera can make accessible in our classroom.

My Students

Overhead projectors, like typewriters and 8-tracks, had their time and place in the world of technology. That time has long passed, but unfortunately the use of an overhead projector is still a reality in my classroom.

My students are an amazing group of second graders who, pardon the cliché, are like little sponges, soaking up information wherever they go and with every interaction they have with others.

They are full of wonder, questions and answers, and stories to share. So many stories. I am extremely fortunate to be able to teach in a culturally and linguistically diverse pre-K-8th grade public school in Chicago. The school provides free and reduced lunches to more than 70% of the students. Keeping up with technology is expensive and therefore something that the school needs help with. This is where you come in!

My Project

Thanks to the generous donations and support of many people, I now have an LCD projector in my classroom that I use with my students. As I make steps toward integrating technology more fully into my classroom, a document camera is becoming less of a technological luxury, and more of a classroom necessity. Currently, I am still using an overhead projector that obviously has its list of limitations. A document camera will allow me to share things with the entire class at the same time. Students will be able to share their own work with classmates. I can project a page out of a book that I am reading aloud so that students can follow along, and I can more easily and effectively teach necessary skills. Science demonstrations can happen with full class participation, and the microphone/speakers will allow me to pair audio with visual presentations. Teaching math games (a huge part of our curriculum) will become more efficient and clear. And the list goes on...

The list of reasons for why a document camera would be life-changing for my classroom is endless, but for me one of the most important reasons is that all students deserve to receive the best education possible and the best resources available.

My students are no exception to this claim. I really believe that all of my students will benefit from having and using a document camera in the classroom. Thank you for helping to make this happen!
