The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning. With this theme comes to need to provide learning opportunities, not only the classroom, but in electives that are interactive, playful, and educationally sound.
The teachers at this school are continually seeking ways in which to incorporate play into learning, and a variety of additional resources are needed to help support this.
My Project
As part of the new magnet theme, the previously taught coding elective has been expanded and developed into a domain called Coding World. This domain allows students to develop critical thinking skills along with creativity and communication while learning about coding fundamentals.
I am requesting Osmo materials, including the Creative Set and Coding Jam, to increase the opportunities for play and learning through Osmo.
My goal is to provide students with logic and problem-solving opportunities through these resources. I am also requesting additional coding resources to increase the opportunities for unplugged, hands-on learning in the coding domain, including a Code Master Programming Logic Game and Future Coders Bunny Trails STEM Activity and Robot Races Coding Skills Kits. The Coders Cube Stackers and Robot Racers will provide students with needed additional resources to continue growing and expanding instruction.
The materials in this project will be utilized not only by the K-2 domain this year, but by classroom teachers throughout the building, as well as the 3-5 coding domain, and will benefit students for years to come!
