Help me give my students mixers and toasters. Our students come to school every day and look forward to Fridays to cook in Living Skills class, but we are limited on cooking supplies.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach students with a wide variety of disabilities that are moderate to intense. This year I taught 7th-12th graders. With their unique qualities they bring a ray of sunshine to all of us every day. I have never felt as needed and accepted as this year with this group of students. With their intense needs they are in need of a lot of outlets in order to digress behaviors that come up.
I teach 33 students with 3 other teachers and 8 Para Professionals.
The students come from low economic backgrounds, mostly with no father figure in the pictures. They are provided free breakfast and lunches. They are not immune to lives full of turmoil and strife and have seen more heartache than many of us. Yet they live on and gladly attend school daily. Most do not miss any days of school. They do not have the necessities that we have in our daily lives.
My Project
We have chosen mixers and toasters for our class, because we make an item every Friday for our Living Skills class. The students do not know how to cook, and this is a real life skill they can benefit from.
We do not have mixers or toasters, so when we are trying to toast, we improvise with an oven, and mix by hand with a spoon.
We sell chips and soda pops to make money to buy food to cook up. We earn $50 a month for food for 33 students. We also go and get free bread to use to make sandwiches and toast. We could benefit from mixers and toasters to use to make our food items.
